Dev Channel Update: 0.10.156.1

Not to be outdone by the beta channel, Chrome OS dev channel has been updated to 0.10.156.1. Unlike the beta channel, Google didn't give post release details to their blog for the dev update. However it stands to reason that the same kernel security issue fixed in the dev update has been fixed. Also, some users on various forums are reporting that a Chrome Sync issue that started with 0.10.146.1 has been resolved in 0.10.156.1. If Google updates their blog with details of the update, I'll update this entry so keep your eyes peeled.

Meanwhile, if you've installed 0.10.156.1, be sure to share your experiences in the comments.

Update: Edgar pointed out in the comments that in this version, if you press the dim button above the 7 and 8, the screen will dim all the way down to completely turning off, a good way to save power if you're just listening to audio or using an external display.

  1. Not sure if this was part of the Chrome dev update or the Chrome OS update (and I'm away from my desktop), but you can now drag and drop apps on the new tab page.

  2. @Christopher. I'm also a big fan of this one.

@everyone. One of my principal hangups with my Cr-48 has been its speed. I've used my HP laptop here and there and often feel blown away by how much faster it is.

I've heard some people say the issue is extensions, and I think that's definitely possible because I'm impressed with how much snappier things feel for me in guest mode.

On the other hand, if extensions are slowing things down, do devs have to tweak their extensions for Chrome OS, or is the OS simply still nascent and extension-related speed fixes are on the way?

To be candid, I would rather read SEC filings than forgo AdBlock.

  3. @Cougar: I switched to the Adblock Plus extension (made by the same guys who make the popular Firefox extension) and it resolved the slowdown issues.

  4. Hmm. I uninstalled AdBlock, installed ABP, quit my account, disabled wifi, and re-enabled wifi. I tested out a few pages and then tested them in guest mode, and I still feel like I noticed a substantial difference between regular/guest.

To be candid, I failed to notice any speed difference between having AdBlock or ABP.

At the end of the day, my assumption is that both extensions would actually speed up page loads because they are supposed to block ads from loading all together (while I currently feel faster in guest mode, with ads).

  7. Is it just me, or have check boxes morphed on this release? I feel like they're more square (than rounded), now, which I guess may describe Yours Truly, as well . . .

  8. Im not sure if this is another find but if you hold cntl-alt+1 you get another keyboard shortcuts page that show things like cntl-alt+m is to use an external monitor and shift+, is settings

  9. Wow, Edgar, I'm impressed. I definitely like how I can get out of the overlay with esc, rather than ctrl+alt+/

I wonder if it's experimental because, e.g., it says ctrl+, will give me settings. I get 0 when I press ctrl+,

  10. Anyone have tips for getting 0.10.146.1 to update to 0.10.156.1? I have been trying for a few days. Attempted to force it with the instructions in a previous post has not worked for me.

  11. If you've put the machine in dev mode by flipping the switch on the inside of the battery holder, then I'm unsure what the problem could be.

  12. @Brian: All I can suggest is either waiting it out or using the USB recovery to revert back to beta-channel then switch to dev-channel and see if it'll go up to 0.10.156.1

  13. Looks like they pulled the 0.10.156.1 update.

  14. @Brian: I don't think so. I've not heard of any issues as problematic as the static audio bug and they didn't pull the updates that introduced that bug. They may just be doing a slow rollout. Did you try the USB Recovery?

  15. I did. After recovering via USB and switching from the beta channel to the dev channel I have arrived where I started at 0.10.146.1

Are there any details on how they are doing a "slow rollout?"

  16. @Brian: I don't have any more details on the update timeline. I suggest you just keep hitting the update button. It can literally take 30+ times before it shows up.

  17. @Jay I was finally able to update. Only the new version is now 0.10.156.4

After reading some other forums it looks like they did pull 0.10.156.1 for various issues

  18. I can confirm this. No wonder we couldn't get an update!
